All human beings come from a mother's womb. We are all the same part of one human family. We should have a clear realization of the oneness of all humanity.

I speak to you as just another human being; as a simple monk. If you find what i say useful, then I hope you will try to practice it.

Given human beings' love of truth, justice, peace, and freedom, creating a better, more compassionate world is a genuine possibility. The potential is there.

two more sleeps 'til christmas (or three if i take a nap tomorrow)
we're ready. okay, so we still have some stuff to do (a few last decorating touches, some box-putting-away, and straightening) but we'll be ready. :D

we don't have to go anywhere until Christmas Day after lunch sometime when we head over to TWD's parents. hopefully the weather cooperates. we'll keep our eye on it, but i am not going to worry about that until/unless ice happens.

we mailed the rest of the cards today. they'll be postmarked in time, but they'll be arriving late. (to think i had such grand plans at Thanksgiving of sending them SOOO early so my family and friends would have our address in time to send us THEIR cards! lol--ah well. *g*) i also want to stick cards on my neighbors' doors and put one in the mailbox for the mail carrier. maybe i'll do that tonight.

we finished up all the shopping for TWD's family last night. so no last minute Christmas Eve present hunting for us, thank goodness. i'm hoping i don't HAVE to go out tomorrow, actually. i want to stay IN!

tonight we stop at the grocery store to get supplies for making Christmas Eve chili for the two of us. (because we always had homemade chili and my grandma's awesome chicken noodle soup on Christmas Eve when we went to my grandparents' house... and caramel corn. *sigh* damn i miss her. *sniffle*) anyway, we've been meaning to make chili for awhile and haven't gotten around to it, so that is what i wanted for dinner.

we'll need to get some eggnog, hot cider, and some cold ciders too. we also have wine and other boozes on hand for sipping by the fire.

we have wood for the fire, a clean and working fireplace, presents are wrapped (mostly), plenty of movies to watch, White Christmas and A Christmas Story (and rumor has it Christmas Vacation) are all going to be 24-hour marathons on various networks so we have those to tune into if we want, we have a purry happy (fat) kitty ... and we have each other.

snug in Our Little George Bailey House. :D

(merry christmas, sweetie.)

if we are truly to help one another and protect this home of ours, each of us needs to experience a vivid sense of compassion and responsibility. Only these feelings can remove the self-centered motives that cause people to deceive and misuse one another.

AND ANOTHER THING... what's in a name?
why would you want to name your baby after celebrities who ... died of drug overdoses? apparently Jackson and Heath rose in the charts. i imagine Brittany and Murphy will be the next year's name du jour. or maybe Jackson Heath Murphy! sad.

Aiden and Emma though are the #1 names of the decade. (i wonder if Emma is #1 because Rachel named her baby Emma on Friends?) pop culture man. gotta love it!

i can't say as i know why Aiden became suddenly popular, but i know few who were born in the last 10 years. :)

it was also "interesting" to note that Bella, while not on the charts whatsoever in 2008 is #67 in 2009. that's a lot of people enamoured of boring and completely uninteresting high school girls who want to be eaten by sparkly vampires. so much so that they all named their babies after her. weird. (howcome no one named their kids Harry or Hermione!? or DUMBLEDORE. what's up with THAT i wonder? *g*)

anyway, i know a Bella who was named before that whole Twilight thing took off. i bet there are Edwards and Roberts and Pattinsons that come out of this too. and Jacobs. but really, if you're that into it enough that you lust after those boys, i think it's just doubly weird to name your child after someone you lust after--especially if you want to be eaten/bitten by them. :/

anywho, i forgot where that name link was, (Today show maybe?) but it's posted somewhere in teh intert00bs.

i'm named after my aunt. yup, my aunt buba and my mom had a sister named Dawntreader90. (yes i'm joking.) i wish i could have met her. (i'm not joking. i really do.)

continuing a "controversial" ? thought
following a menorah discussion at Hanukkah about whether a non-jewish person can own or light a menorah, can a non-christian write christmas music? sure! why not??

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/18/opinion/18feinstein.html?_r=1

do people get offended by it? apparently! though i've never personally met one who was actually offended by this. song is song and music is great music regardless who wrote it. it transcends culture, language and belief.

usually it's the people who want to avoid christmas altogether who complain that holiday music appears in the vicinity of a store they are frequenting. or at least complaining that it appears so early which is MY complaint. who wants to hear that stuff in early November?! christmas music is for CHRISTMASTIME. or winter time. solstice time. hanukkah time. (whateverisyourdecembertime.) it's like belonging to a musical where everyone knows the words. (considering some of the best-known songs are FROM shows and musicals, this idyllic view makes sense. *g*)

anyway. it seems like a lot of people are unhappy about this time of year because other people Don't Do It Right. i want to tell them to lighten up! it's winter. it's cold. people are busy. it's a time when warmth and cheer are in short supply.

why can't people just be nice to each other? howcome *that's* such a terrible thing? we watched A Christmas Carol the other night (the George C. Scott version). it got to the part where the Cratchitts get an anonymous Christmas turkey. they are so excited and happy at their good fortune and the kindness shown to them.

then i said wryly, "you know nowadays if that happened, the mother would probably shout, "DON'T EAT IT! it could be poisoned! we're not accepting that anonymous turkey if we don't know who it's from!" because no one can just "be" nice or "do" nice for each other anymore. it seems suspect that people just want to wish someone well in whatever 'language' they know how. cynical, i know. i feel awful even thinking it, but it's true.

another example of how things have changed, i love sending and giving cards, but i don't want to make people mad by giving them a card they didn't 'want' or that accidentally says the wrong thing in it. :(

then the other day i heard a lady in my office say, "I am SO TIRED of hearing 'Happy Holidays!' it's MERRY CHRISTMAS." real nice attitude, thar, toots. you bring it allll home.

so if you want to be offended that someone tells you Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, then you'll be offended. if you want to be angry when someone says Merry Christmas when you don't celebrate it or believe it, then you'll be offended. if you want to throw Merry Christmas like weapon instead of a happy greeting, you won't win many friends either. and if you (like Garrison Keillor apparently) feel that insist christmas is a special members-only holiday and no one else should experience wonder and joy this time of year (or steal your songs!?) because they don't believe the same way you do, well, life is going to be what you make of it.

unhappy and a little more lonely.

it's impossible to know what connections people could discover if their circles remained just a little more open and forgiving.

the smallest gestures...
1. yesterday i came home to find a card in my mailbox. not unusual this time of year. it was actually the only thing in my mailbox. that part was a little unusual considering the amount of junk mail we usually get. but the TRULY unusual thing was the address on the card. just the first line of my address. no town, no zip and no ... stamp!

the return address? a lady's name and "Mail Carrier."

yup, our mail carrier gave us a christmas card. we don't have the same mail carrier here that we did across the street. (and obviously not the same mail person who stole and drank our wine.) but how cool was that? how nice is that? and how many cards does she buy for people on her route? i realize we live in a smallish town, but still, that's probably a lot of cards. i think that's unbelievably nice.

i had even thought of leaving a card in the mailbox before we got ours, but thought "nahh, they'll never notice it. they'd probably just think that was weird." now i want to reciprocate but think "she'll just think SHE'S getting one because she gave US one." lol but oh well. i probably will anyway. :D

2. after taking the card upstairs, i noticed a box stuck in the middle of our wreath. the note on the box said, "Sorry I missed you! Merry Christmas." the note? signed by our realtor. we opened the box (okay I opened the box because i couldn't wait. lol) and inside was a silvery ornament ball with white glitter dusted on it in the shape of homes lined up in a row. it's sooo pretty. it's our first 'home' themed ornament. i hadn't even *thought* of buying a home ornament! (which suprises me, because i usually think of those sorts of things for other people.)

i was really touched. even TWD said, "cool." i hung it on our first tree in our first home. so unbelievably nice.

3. the soiree we were planning to attend sunday evening at TWD's fencing club was postponed until last night and it was lovely. they catered some veggies, cheeses, and fruit trays, and some sammiches and pizza, and everyone was asked to bring a dessert. BOY DID THEY. and dips and chips and more veggies and fruit trays and some more cheese and cookies and brownies and eggnog and sodas and crackers and truffles and cakes and pies and *SPLODEY!* the table was overflowing with good things. LOTS of good things. (good things of which i ate far too many! *g*) we brought a yule log cake i bought at the store (not having the foresight to buy baking supplies BEFORE the blizzard meant i didn't have time or ingredients to bake anything). it was very pretty and festive. (and tasteh!) :D

the other thing they requested was to bring personal grooming items, cleaning supplies, or things like that because they were taking it all over to a local shelter to donate. we brought some bottles of shampoo and conditioner, liquid dishsoap, toothpaste and toothbrushes (2 adult and a 2-pack of kid snoopy toothbrushes--i wonder who picked those out??) with the knowledge they are going to a good cause this winter solstice. what an unbelievably nice thing to do for the community!!

but the other wonderful thing was when the coach thanked everyone for coming and wished us all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and such. on behalf of he and his wife, he thanked everyone for the support of the club. he thanked all of us for allowing them to do what they do for a living. he even got a little choked up as he genuinely tried to explain to everyone what it meant to them to be allowed to have the club and its members... the little family they've built up over the last couple years. he almost didn't get through it and cut his sentiments short. we all thanked THEM instead and applauded wildly.

i was honored to feel included and be there with TWD last night. we had a lovely time. :)

A mind committed to compassion is like an overflowing reservoir--a constant source of energy, determination, and kindness.

********************************************************************

I pray for a more friendly, more caring, and more understanding human family on this planet. To all who dislike suffering, who cherish lasting happiness, this is my heartfelt appeal.

********************************************************************

We don't give our compassion to such and such a person by choice. We give it spontaneously, entirely, without hoping for anything in exchange. And we give it universally.

The shortest day...
"And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us - listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And now so do we, here, now,
This year and every year."
